Metalinguistic Analysis

The act of understanding, explaining, or analyzing the structure of some linguistic element aside from its meaning – also known as grammar (perhaps doing metalinguistic analysis is the same as grammaring). Since analysis is a skill itself, metalinguistic analysis is not the same as grammar – it’s the ability to perceive and describe that structure. Many English speakers who have survived a formal academic setting are able to do metalinguistic analysis of English with moderate skill. Many English speakers who have survived a formal academic setting and studied Spanish are probably adept at metalinguistic analysis of Spanish, although they may have no ability to produce linguistic meaning other than at the most rudimentary level.
