Immigrant

A person who moves somewhere else to stay for a spell. Though often believed to refer to people crossing national borders, immigrants are people who move into any community where they are considered outsiders. In the US, often coupled with “refugees” who are people who are forced to leave an area due to devastation, war, environmental, economic or other catastrophe.

First Generation – Usually refers to a person who immigrates to another country, who generally retains a reference point to their home country, even after many years.

Second Generation – Generally refers to the children of immigrant parents who are fully acculturated to the culture to which their parents immigrated.

Generation 1.5 – Generally refers to children brought to another country with their parents. They will often be able to code switch very skillfully between their parents’ home culture and the culture to which their parents immigrated.
