Ampersand

The Ampersand (&) used to be the 27th letter of the English alphabet – it’s a fascinating and beautiful character with the linguistic function of bringing things together. Sometimes it looks like a plus, but the E-shape of the symbol comes because it was actually a stylized abbreviation for “etcetera”. You can see that even more clearly in our icon for the Ampersand program.

We chose the Ampersand because it’s a piece of language that’s primary function is to bring disparate elements together. And as a budding interculturalist & cross-cultural bridge builder, that’s your function, too – to bring disparate elements together for harmonious communication.
