TEFL Certificate + Practicum Options
Classroom Confidence Certificate (CCC)
The International TEFL Academy’s online program requires a 20 hour practicum which requires some practice teaching. Our Practicum Certificate fulfills this requirement and more, at no cost to you if you are already enrolled in one of our partner programs. You’ll shadow 4 classes, then do a “Dress Rehearsal” using a lesson we provide you. You’ll then have 10 more classroom experiences, allowing you get over your nervousness and put some of that theory into practice.
The CCC costs $200 for people looking for basic skills, but we offer it at no tuition to many of our partners.
Full Apprenticeship with the English for the Community Practicum
If you want to become a competent classroom facilitator, and serve the community of non native English speakers here in Greater Portland, you can add the Full Apprenticeship for only $200 (an $895 value) once you earn the CCC, Learn more about the EFTC here. This requires a minimum of 50 facilitation experiences, as well as a supportive community of other facilitators in training and an abundance of guidance, resources, job leads, and learning opportunities. Then you’ll have two certificates: one reflecting your knowledge, the other reflecting your experience. This will make you a very attractive hire for English schools worldwide.
English for the Community Practicum Certificate
If you have an associates degree or higher, you can take the EFTC Practicum as a standalone certificate. Employers increasingly are recognizing the value of classroom experience and confidence – and many schools will hire you just because you’re a native speaker. We should talk first about where you want to go and your timelines.

To learn more about teaching English outside the US, read on!
English as the World’s Lingua Franca
“Trying to figure out the best way to prepare for teaching English across the world? You’ve got two choices: The Cambridge CELTA and the Wild Wild West.”
Just a little web surfing on a site like Dave’s ESLCafe will reveal that there are so many jobs out there – but how do you if know the job is good? You often won’t, and this is a big risk to take!
Patrik, P-P-T’s founder and program director, had a very difficult and transformative experience after he got his Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Certificate and left the US to teach. He didn’t get paid for months, there was no heat in his apartment during the winter, he was robbed (come to Office Hours for the whole story).
Simply having a certificate is no guarantee that any job you find will be good (although a Master’s degree significantly improves your chances). That’s why we are using our out-of-country experience to make excellent relationships with excellent schools. You have fewer options, but they are good ones.
Programs outside the country gain from partnering with us, too – there are so many shady schools out there that the good ones have to do a lot of explaining to nervous first-timers why they’re great. We can tell a good school from a shady one. That means we can provide them with serious teachers who care and have actual classroom experience, instead of flaky tourists who show up unprepared and disappear without warning.
TEFL jobs are plentiful throughout the world. The higher paying, more stable jobs such as universities and well-paying private schools require a Master’s Degree – an MA TESOL is highly desirable.
You can get an MA TESOL in Portland at Portland State University, Department of Applied Linguistics, Multnomah University, and Concordia University. The Middle East and Japan are good examples of countries that offer well-paying jobs if you have this degree.
There are plenty of well-paying jobs around the world that require no more than a Bachelor’s Degree and/or a TESOL certificate of some sort. China, South Korea and Taiwan are prime examples.
Here’s the big secret: if you’re willing to chance it and go to a city (even in Europe) and spend a week or two, you’ll likely be able to find well-paying work in a school or as a private tutor. Native English speakers are in demand all over the world, and many schools will hire you if you show up on their doorstep and you seem nice and have light skin (there are racist and imperialist undertones to English teaching throughout the world, something P-P-T is consciously working to address).
Of course, P-P-T offers no guarantees, but we can definitely improve the likelihood of a good outcome.
